Command-Line Tools

Command-line tools are where it's at! With the command-line, you can just plain do more than with a GUI. Don't get me wrong, the GUI is great for dealing with spreadsheets, word documents, images; but when dealing with the filesystem and automating cron jobs and process, the command-line can not be beaten!

4NT I've used 4NT for almost ten year now. Forging it's roots in the old 16-bit DOS days as 4DOS, the developers of this software (JPSoft.com) have continued to push it's feature set and ability top do almost anything on your computer. It's perfect for Programmers, IT Operations and even the most savvy Power-User!
GNU Where would we be with GNU!? The GNU Project was started in 1984 to develop a complete UNIX like operating system. Even if you haven't heard of GNU, I'm sure you've heard of the Linux kernel. Linux provides the linux-kernel which is responsible for managing resources (memory, storage, drivers), processes and events in the operating system for programs; this is all behind the scenes. Be itself, the Linux kernel is useless without programs and this is where GNU comes in, with it's almost 5000 software packages which turn in the Linux kernel into GNU/Linux the Operating System! Luckily a group of poeple have brought the power of the GNU to the Windows OS. The below group of software packages represent a hand-picking of the GNU set, providing excellent utilities for automation and file processing.
TSE/32 Every command-line needs a text/file editor! Semware has been pumping out upgrades to this fantastically fast, nimble and highly configurable editor since the early DOS days with their QEdit. Like 4NT, I've been using TSE/32 since the 90's! It's amazing!
Compressed Files
WinRAR is an awesome utility for dealing with compressed files. It provides an extensive list of features and functions, but it great at decompressing RAR, ZIP and other types of files. I highly recommend this as a replacement for the the ancient and lame WinZIP.
Graphical Tools
AnalogX Capture is a quick-and-easy screen capture utility for Windows (and NT), which allows you to capture the entire screen, at any color depth and resolution, and save it into a Bitmap file for editing.
TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and state of TCP connections. On Windows NT, 2000 and XP TCPView also reports the name of the process that owns the endpoint. TCPView provides a more informative and conveniently presented subset of the Netstat program that ships with Windows. The TCPView download includes Tcpvcon, a command-line version with the same functionality.
Bandwidth Monitor Super-slick little utility that just sits in the system tray of your computer and provides great reports and graphs on the upstream/downstream and total network traffic on your computer.
Ping Plotter A great little utility to watch computers on the internet, detect downtime and slow "hops" in the traffic on the internet to get to your computers!
Firefox Unless you've been hiding underneath a rock, you know about Firefox. If you're using Internet Explorer, stop! Download Firefox and help take back the internet from Microsoft. Firefox's stict adherence to standards allows it to run on almost computer system on the planet, not just Windows; and it doesn't have a global plan of turning the Internet into Microsoft's Internet, M$'s insistence to develop scripting languages and website that only work on their browser.
